CHCstories: The Thinking Hut

Amsterdam is considered a city with one of the highest number of freelancers in Europe, so co-working spaces are numerous and diverse. While being shortly there this week, we have used the opportunity to step out of the busy city-centre and visit a hub and a co-working space The Thinking Hut to share their creative journey. It all started in 2012 when a group of friends who have been working together, needed more space for one of their projects: “we decided to take the search for a new space to the next level, opening up an environment where more like-minded people could share their knowledge and experience, and have some fun!”

The Thinking Hut now can be found on two locations in Amsterdam: near the Oosterpark on the East and next to the Olympic Stadium in the southern part of the city in a recently renovated 400m2 former bike factory. We have visited the one situated at the northern entrance to the Oosterpark – a beautiful urban park, filled with ponds and streams which is definitely appreciated by the Thinking Hut co-workers who are able to take a break from a busy day in the office and step into the nature next door.

The brick building from 1912 used to be a stable which after renovation works became a collaborative work environment of 500m2 where international community of entrepreneurs, freelancers, designers, writers, web developers, project managers… can work on their own projects, but at the same time have the possibility to share, network, collaborate and create with others. The interior is comprised of different types of modular spaces connected with corridors and stairs, some of them open while others more private. Combined materials, wood and glass make it even more attractive, minimalist yet comfortable. A cosy lounge area offers a space to relax, share a meal or grab a coffee. Every week, the Thinking Hut is hosting different local producers offering the opportunity to its co-workers to have a healthy breakfast or a lunch and when the weather allows, this is done in their beautiful garden, often also used for working or organizing a meeting in fresh air.

The Thinking Hut offers different types of memberships (fixed or flexible) as well as meeting facilities, adapted to the needs of the users. In addition, a wide variety of events is weekly on the Hut’s agenda – from concerts and meetups to workshops and exhibitions promoting young artists, free and open for everyone. They aspire to become a creative network for those working at the space, their friends, and colleagues.
